Anil Ambani Early Life, Education and Family
Anil Dhirubhai Ambani is basically from the Gujrati background. His father and mother Mr Dhirubhai Ambani and Mrs Kokilaben started the business from zero and built an empire of Reliance Industries. In 2002 his father died of a heart stroke. Before dying Mr Ambani handed over the business to his sons. Initially, there were differences between the two brothers regarding property but later they resolved it by splitting the company into two parts. Reliance Industries Ltd and Reliance ADA group. Mukesh became the CEO and Anil Ambani was the Managing Director.
Ambani in one of his interviews said that their father used to take them on incentive-oriented outings where they used to get rewards like a box of mangoes for each 10 km hike. Mr Ambani completed his graduation in Bachelor of Science from Kishinchand Chellaram College, Mumbai. After that, he went to New York to complete his further studies. After the untimely demise of Mr Dhirubhai Ambani, there was a property dispute between the two Ambani brothers. The first part was RIL (Reliance Industries Limited) and the other was Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group.
Anil had interests in telecom, entertainment, infrastructure, power and financial services. So he started these as a subsidiary company of the Reliance Group. Reliance Communication was once one of the main companies in the telecom sector. It started in 2004. Apart from the CDMA2000 network services they invested in Reliance cell phones too. Reliance Power which is a major company of the Reliance Group was founded in 1995. This company was the electricity distributor in many regions of Maharashtra. This company produces Electricity and Natural Gas. In 2017, Adani Power acquired this company and took the charge of electricity distribution. They have also started this in Goa and Andhra Pradesh. Reliance Power is currently operating 13 medium and large-sized power projects in India.
Ambani started Reliance Power in 2008. It is still the fastest subscribed company in the field of capital market of India. In 2008, Ambani invested in an entertainment company by acquiring the majority stake in Adlabs films. Later in 2009, it was renamed Reliance MediaWorks. It was a production house. In 2008, he collaborated with Steven Spielberg’s entertainment company named DreamWorks and took Reliance MediaWorks on a global platform. In 2019, Ambani was accused of not paying the debt to the Swedish gear maker Ericsson. He was given the time of one month to pay all his debt by the Mumbai court. After not paying the debt, he was held in jail for 1 month. His elder brother Mukesh Ambani bailed him out. Again in 2020, he got locked in criminal contempt for not paying a loan borrowed from three Chinese banks. UK court declared him bankrupt. In 2021, he was also in news due to his name in Pandora Papers.
