Anil Dhirubhai Ambani is basically from the Gujrati background. His father and mother Mr Dhirubhai Ambani and Mrs Kokilaben started the business from zero and built an empire of Reliance Industries. In 2002 his father died of a heart stroke. Before dying Mr Ambani handed over the business to his sons. Then their mother Mrs. kokilaben Ambani distributed the business between the two brothers and mediated the issue. Reliance Industries was divided into two parts. The first part was RIL (Reliance Industries Limited) and the other was Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Ambani Group.
