Dhanteras Story

There is a Legend related to the Day of Dhanteras. It is a belief that there was a King by the name of Hima who had a son. When the king’s son was 16, a priest predicted that the son will die from a snake bite on 4th night of his marriage. Even after knowing the story a girl still married the King’s son. On the 4th night after the marriage, the newlywed wife put all the ornaments and shining things at the door of the sleeping chamber. She lit hundreds of lamps in the room, which was making the ornaments more shiner. Then she started reciting religious songs along with religious stories to prevent her husband to sleep.

Later that night when the GOD of death Lord Yama arrives in a form of a snake. He surprises and baffles with all the shining. His eyes were so affected by the brightness of the ornaments, he was almost blinded by that. He claimed the heap of ornaments and got more surprised by the light-up room and end up sitting at the top of the heap. The snake waited all night and in the morning he left and this was a newly-wed wife able to save the life of her husband.
