Story of Holika and Prahlad

Many legends are associated with the Festival of colours. The most popular one in North India is the story of Prahlad and his aunt Holika. So, Prahlad was the son of Hiranyakashyapu, the King of Asuras (anti-gods). Contradicting his inheritance, Prahlad was a prime devotee of Lord Vishnu, the prime enemy of his father. Hiranyakashyapu devised many tactics to divert his son’s perceptions and even kill him. However, Lord Vishnu always looked out for Prahlad and saved his life, making him more faithful to Narayana.

Frustrated by his son’s betrayal, the Asur Lord approached his evil sister who had a sacred cloak which did not let her burn or get a fire wound. Hiranyakashyapu’s sister, Holika deceived her nephew to sit with her in a Holika pyre. Regardless, the fire god, too, was a devotee of Lord Vishnu and refused to burn his companion Prahlad. Instead, the holy cloak slipped away to protect Prahlad and Holika died screaming in the fire. Hence, the moral of the story is the victory of good over evil.

Cultural Significance of Holi

Holi is the celebration of the flowers blossoming in the spring season while awaiting summer and farewell to the winter season. People play, laugh, and speared love and colours while strengthening the old bonds and mending the broken ones. Holi allows adults to be a little too mischievous without feeling judged. As they say, “Bura na mano, Holi hai!” It is the remembrance of rich culture by smearing colours and bursting water bombs on each other.

People dance, sing, eat and share delicious food with each other while forgetting and forgiving past grievances. People organise functions such as poetry contests to giggle and create more memories. Every year people collect more and more reasons to get down memory lane after celebrating holi. May Holi 2023 be the best festival of colours you’ve ever celebrated so far.
