Born from Shrimati Murti Devi and Shriman Sughar Singh Yadav he was the second child of his parents. Among the six siblings, Ratan Singh was his elder brother. Yadav persuaded his basic schooling from a school in Etawah. He has a graduation degree in Political Science discipline. Mulayam Yadav completed his BA from Karm Kshetra PG college in Etawah, BT from AK college in Shikhohabad and Master’s course in Arts from BR college, Agra. In spite of being a famous political leader, Mulayam was also a former teacher and an agriculturalist. Mulayam was deeply inspired by Ram Manohar Lohia and Raj Narain for his political career. Mulayam Singh Yadav was elected as MLA in 1967, and this is where his political journey began. He was the supreme leader of the Samajwadi Party and a socialist leader who served other parties too. When Indira Gandhi was the Prime Minister of India, she imposed an emergency in which Mulayam Singh sent to Jail for 19 months in 1975. Afterward, Mulayam became the state minister of Uttar Pradesh in 1977. Later, he became the president of the Lok Dal in 1980 and between 1982-85 he remained a leader of the opposition in UP’s legislative council.

Between 1996 and 1998 he served as the Defence Minister of India. Mulayam was elected as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh three non-consecutive times in the year 1989, 1993 and 2003. When he was appointed as the chief minister of Uttar Pradesh in 1989, he was succeeded by Kalyan Singh in 1991. The second time, in 1993, Yadav was again appointed as the chief minister and his tenure lasted from 1995 to June. The third time, he came into power in 2003 and this time he ruled Uttar Pradesh for 5 years when his tenure came to an end in 2007.
